May 6, 2023 On Cinco de Mayo, Mississippi hosted the daily mass shooting event. While the body count was low (1 dead, 6 injured), it still was terrifying for the people just trying to enjoy a local restaurant. Earlier in the week, Georgia had hosting duties with 1 dead and 4 injured in an Atlanta medical center waiting room. Today’s mass casualty event was (of course) in Texas at an outlet mall in Allen. That’s 5,256 more cases than I reported last week and 1,519 of our Collin residents have died (5 additional deaths). That’s a sharp increase in cases and hospitalization numbers are slowly rising. Our test positivity rate is very high, indicating that cases are being significantly undercounted. This makes sense given many people are testing at home and not reporting positive results. If we want to do something about the unjust Trayvon Martin verdict, we must stop thinking about vengeance, and prepare ourselves for a long, hard fight against a discriminatory infrastructure. The Stand Your Ground laws must be overturned. People who have a history of domestic violence and resisting arrest — people like George Zimmerman — should not be allowed to own or carry guns.
